Review #22

Hmm, what to talk about, what to talk about...Again, no particular game to talk about, mostly wanting to talk about myself(my favorite subject, as I believe I've mentioned before), although games do figure in. I'm such a gamer that games pretty much always figure in.

So, I read a few webcomics. One of my friends reads a lot of webcomics, he's got a review site for them and everything, he's doing pretty well with it. I used to think I read a lot of webcomics, but really, maybe ten on a regular basis. One of the comics I read, and I'm sure this will come as no surprise to anyone, is Penny Arcade, pretty much the quintessential gaming comic. Another is Ctrl-Alt-Del, another gaming comic.

The guys that run those sites all play or played City of Heroes, and they all play World of Warcraft. And when I found out that they were playing these games that I also play, my first thought was, "I should try to figure out which server they're on, maybe I could join their supergroup/guild or something. That would be awesome." I think that's a pretty normal fannish reaction, but then I got to thinking: Why would these guys want to hang out with me? Why would they care? I mean, sure, they're probably glad I read their strips, in the general way that they're glad anyone reads their strips, but what do I think is so special about me? I mean, I don't participate in their site community, I don't buy merchandise from them, I don't write them fan mail or anything, I don't donate money to them or the PA guys' Child's Play charity, hell, I almost never even click on their ads...I don't participate at all, I don't give back, I just consume. So even if I could track them down, why would they want to waste even more time entertaining me for no reward, when they already have plenty of *real* fans to hang out with? And even if I do track them down(because I did, actually, track down the guy that does Ctrl-Alt-Del, he actually made it pretty easy), I don't really have anything to say to them. This is how pretty much every conversation with every creator of anything I am a fan of I have ever met has gone: "Uh...I like your work." "Thanks." "Uh...yeah. Bye."

Dammit. I had more I wanted to say about this, but it all seems to have gone away. I'll try to come back to this at some point, I wasn't done.
